>> SCARY MANSION
- "Make Me Cry" - out, october 26th
Leah Hayes is the mastermind behind
the Brooklyn-based rock group SCARY MANSION. After
playing for several years as an Antifolk singer/songerwriter,
Hayes picked up bassist Bradley Banks, and former-Fugue-member
Ben Shapiro. She then found herself fronting a wild rock band.
"I still write the songs and sing, but I like having boys
making crazy noise behind me.
Though Scary Mansion is surely the world's
only thunderstick/bass/drums rock trio, the band is most notable
for its rare mix of sentimental melody and rocky noise, often
likened to Weezer and The Pixies. Hayes's lyrics embody the
alienated cleverness of Morrissey or Stephen Merritt. On "Scum
Inside", she laments, "When I think of all the scum
inside, I just die." On the chorus of "1%",
she recites over and over, "You 1% like yourself."
And all the while the music goes from clean to distorted,
from comforting to explosive.
Scary Mansion's newest record,
"Make Me Cry", comes out on Talitres Records
in Europe on October 2009.

>> LE LOUP - new
album "Family" - out, september 21st
Like most families, Le Loup has grown since
its inception. What began as the bedroom project of Sam Simkoff
is now a full-sized band, with all five members contributing
vocals and songwriting credits. The band's music - originally
a blend of keyboard loops, banjo, and computer wizardry -
has grown as well, encompassing everything from shape note
harmonies to polyphonic percussion.
Simkoff and band-mate Christian Ervin produced
Family themselves, having previously worked together on the
band's debut, The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations'
Millennium General Assembly (2007). Unlike that first album,
Family doesn't rely on synthesizers or electronic support.
Instead, the musicians took a more elemental approach, capturing
the organic sounds of their instruments before treating them
with various effects.
The result is an album of experimental rock
songs and campfire sing-alongs, set amidst swirling textures
and murky production. Le Loup is still a young family, of
course, but Family is nothing short of a musical coming-of-age,
and adulthood never sounded so promising.
>> FRANCOIS AND
THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS - "Plaine Inondable", out september
2009
Frànçois came to Bristol from France in September
2003. He drew a picture and put a note in a window announcing
his arrival, and asking people to make music with him. He
started going to car-boot sales to find some instruments he
could use. Overnight, Frànçois won the hearts out of this
town. Well of course, he’s a sweet kid, but he’s also armed
with an eager sense of adventure and a keen taste for pop
thrills.
In January 2004 he played his first live
show, taking to the stage alone, making use of keyboards (played
with his foot), a guitar, live samples and a drum machine,
mixing playful and experimental ideas with his natural pop-tune
sensibilities and sweet bilingual vocals. The string of live
performances he has since played has all been eagerly anticipated
and utterly charming. Musically, you could say he is reminiscent
of STEREO TOTAL, VELVET UNDERGROUND, HOOD, and FRANÇOISE HARDY
and yet he is also like nothing else at all.
In 2008 Fránçois took a break and went back
to live with his parents in France with the intention to stop
the music side of things and to hide behind his brushes and
watercolour paints. There he found support from a bunch of
local friends who convinced him to do some recordings of the
works he had prepared for a show in Paris at the Centre Pompidou.
The recordings of “Plaine Inondable” took place partly in
Charente-Maritime and partly in the Basques Country. For those
sessions the musicians were the polyphonic quintet Bost Gehio
and members from Unkle Jelly Fish.

>> BE MY WEAPON
- 'march/2009'

BE MY WEAPON is DAVID FREEL / SWELL
(guitars, vocals, etc…) and RON BURNS (drums). The
album was mostly recorded at ‘The Pink Boot’ studio in the
western cascade mountains of Oregon, starting around august
2008, and ending in march 2009 (with two months spent touring
in the middle).
For some reason, David Freel started writing
a whole load of songs in 2007 (ditto 2008): 10 of these songs
were used on Swell’s last album ‘South Of The Rain And Snow’
and 10 are used here on Be
Me Weapon’s.

- "Every Joke Is Half The Truth"

To say that Leah Hayes is poised for greatness
would be underselling how much she’s already accomplished
in her 26 years. Massachusetts-bred Hayes attended art school
in New York before moving to France where she played in a
band called Satan’s Fingers, collaborating with David Ivar
from underground pop legends Herman Dune. Growing up playing
piano and guitar, Hayes also took up the Thunderstick, an
Appalachian instrument similar in tone to the banjo. Her collection
of ballpoint pen notebook illustrations Holy Moly was published
by Fantagraphics in 2004 and her first graphic novel, Funeral
of the Heart, was published in April, 2008. >>...>>>

Continuing from 'Swords', their brilliant
dada road-movie debut on Skint Records, 'Attic Thieves'
confirms Ralfe Band a special place as one of England's most
original, melodic and richly poetic bands.
Inside its old mirrored room you will find
Oly Ralfe's latest almanac of twelve richly varied
songs and instrumentals. The recordings here range from the
beautifully personal to the eerily comic, with song lyrics
peppered with mysterious alter-egos, all reflecting an inventive

>> THE WALKMEN -
You & Me, out soon on Talitres for France, Switzerland,
Benelux, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Scandinavia, Poland,
Greece and Austria
The music that inspired the Walkmen
to compose You
and Me follows in a tradition of song writing
that goes back to early rock 'n' roll: the intimacy and energy
of Elvis Presley's and Buddy Holly's early recordings, and
the massive voice and orchestration of Roy Orbison. And it
carries on through people like Bob Marley and Randy Newman
and on to bands like The Pogues and The Modern Lovers - the
sort of songs that are very much a product of their time and
place while firmly rooted in tradition. The vocals were performed
live right in the room with the full band, and sometimes a
horn section too
